This work, titled "Harmony," by artist Allison Coelho Picone , received 2nd place in a contest at Fine Art America [FAA] titled "The World of Sunflowers." To learn more about Allison and her work see her website.
One of the fun things about being an artist member of FAA is entering contests and adminstrating contests. All of the contests are only available to FAA members for entry - all contests are voted on and some are open to any visitor to the website for voting. I chose to make the Sunflowers contest open to the public and it received quite a lot of views. It was like a successful art exhibition at a brick 'n mortar venue. Very cool.
Sunflowers are mezmerizing subjects for artists. Why is that? I think it's because of their size. They are a flower that grows to be the size of a baby palm tree...and one of the few flowers whose seeds we consume right along with the birds. The most famous example of art featuring the sunflower has to be Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers." He did other paintings featuring these seeded beauties but this is the most well known.
My own version of sunflowers began as a photo of a bouquet of sunflowers I bought at my local grocery store one fall day. I set them in a vase and then took multiple photos. Once I had a composition of flower heads that I liked, I took that photo into my old Photoshop and went to work. I like using digitally-based artist tools as much as those found on my art table. All the principles are the same.
So what about the other two winners in this contest? Third place prize of a "Heart Well Done!" went to artist Sandra Quintus for her work "Sunflowers for Susan."
Artist Sorin Apostolescu won first place for his work, "Dark Sunflower," and his prize is an interview here on Mosaic Mandalas. Stay tuned for my Meet Romanian Artist Sorin Apostolescu coming very soon!
